Muraca Design and Studio Brocante
Retail, SpaceI first met Sandy years ago when C-Ville Weekly hired me to take a portrait of her in her favorite space. When she got back in touch, wanting portfolio images for her website and product vignettes for her online store, I was thrilled. Who wouldn't want to spend hours with a talented designer, surrounded by French antiques, chatting about food, travel, and family? We hit it off immediately and had a lovely couple of days building her image library.
Check out Sandy's shop, Studio Brocante, filled with pieces she has personally chosen while traveling in France. I'd like one of everything, please.
Living Space - Tudor Grove
Living Space, SpaceTudor Grove; a home and property steeped in history and filled with character. I was first introduced to her by Abby, whose mother, Camille, inhabits Tudor Grove's many walls. Having photographed Abby's home the previous year, I was especially excited to see Camille's, expecting a similar commitment of style applied to an historic context. Not disappointed, I spent my first visit eagerly soaking in each room trying, unsuccessfully, to take in every, single detail. Camille is a collector; of books, art, plants, photographs and natural curiosities, among other things. It is impossible to see it all at once and even now, many months later, I am still discovering pieces in the images that I missed with my naked eye.
Welcome, to Tudor Grove.

Virginia Distillery Company
Food, SpaceI loved working with the Virginia Distillery Company to capture images for their new website designed by ID Company. We shot the first image of the bottle and glass in the C&O bar, a classic Charlottesville spot with moody lighting. Bottles are always challenging; bottles in a dark space are especially challenging and this image made me push myself in an exciting way.
The distillery is located in Lovingston and will soon feature a visitor's center where the public can learn more about their Virginia Highland Malt Whiskey!

Living Space, Published, SpaceI am thrilled to have images I captured of Stephanie Fishwick's home featured in Matchbook Magazine. Stephanie is an amazing artist and calligrapher, and her home reflects the personality that is so clearly shown in her work.

ecoMOD South - UVA School of Architecture
SpaceWhen I was in in the master's program at the UVA School of Architecture I spent a semester working on the ecoMOD Seam project. It was an incredible experience working with other students and our professor and project creator, John Quale, to design and build a real home as part of our education. This summer I was thrilled to photograph the newest project, ecoMOD South, for their portfolio. Here are a few of my favorite images.

SpaceAnother Wolf Ackerman project, The Oakhurst Inn, is under way at the corner of JPA and Oakhurst Circle. The historic renovation of these three homes was actually a project that I worked on when I was a designer at Wolf Ackerman 3+ years ago. What fun to see three of the rooms in one of the homes complete and ready for marketing photos! Styling by Kenny Ball Design.

The Granary - Natural Retreats
Life, SpaceLooking for a getaway within reasonable driving distance to Charlottesville? Search no further. Natural Retreats offers a variety of homes for a family vacation or weekend retreat in Bath County, VA. I was there in June to photograph a number of these unique homes and fell in love with several, but one in particular: The Granary. I loved it so much that I returned two weekends ago with Brian and the pups in tow. See the bottom of this post for some of our Instagrams from our stay.

SpaceI adore this barn-turned-studio designed by Rachel Bishop in her backyard. With space for both she and her husband to work, it is the perfect combination of manly workshop and inspiring interior design studio.
Where I've Been...

Between producing our first publication at Beyond the Flavor, shooting more interiors and food than ever before, and growing a little human, it's no wonder that there has been no time to blog! I am hoping to get all caught up and share the fun projects I have been working on these last few months before the little man arrives in October. Living Space | A Family Home in Greenwood
Living Space, SpaceI adore this home outside of Charlottesville in Greenwood, VA. The Abbots have called this house, built 180 years ago as the Greenwood School for Boys, their home for nearly twenty years. Their three girls grew up here, as have their golden retreivers, leaving traces of family in every room. A true Living Space in every way, when I visited last December I knew I needed to return to document this special place.
The house itself is dripping with character, from uneven plaster walls to exposed beams across the ceilings, and is adorned with the simple, chic style of a family who loves comfort, nature and art. Each room is comfortably bright even on the grayest of days, nearly causing me to give in to the desire to curl up with a book or magazine on a slip-covered chair in a light-filled corner. With the family dogs pressing their noses to the glass doors, I moved through each room slowly and meticulously, taking moments to sit on a couch, touch a blanket, and observe the art on the walls, trying my best to imagine how the family who lives here inhabits each space.

Scout is Out! Charlottesville Vol. 5
Food, Published, Restaurant, Retail, SpaceA good part of my winter was spent working with Heather Halsey, editor of The Scout Guide - Charlottesville, to create the fifth volume in the beautiful Charlottesville series. What a pleasure!!! Each photo shoot was so different, with a wonderful variety of people, spaces, and products to capture. Below are a few of my favorite spreads.

Living Space, SpaceThis is the home of Abby Kasonik and Roderick Coles. I knew before I stepped across the threshold that their home would be extraordinary. She's an artist, he owns The Curious Orange, and together they've created a living space filled with a collection of furniture, art, and objects that reflect the creativity that drives their life. I first met Abby when I photographed her backyard studio for Cville Abode. She invited me into her home for a tour and I immediately fell head over heels for her style. Lush fabrics, dark wood, gilded mirrors, found objects and giant house plants had me swooning in each room we entered. I am so grateful that she agreed to be part of my living space project, inviting me back on a cold morning two weeks ago.
These images are not styled. Abby understood my intention to capture details of the life lived within the walls of her home, and purposefully refrained from throwing out flowers past their prime or removing laundry from an upstairs bed. I adore her. Because the point of this project is not to capture perfect, spotless interiors. The point is to capture real life in an evocative way. To attempt to insert myself into these spaces and see them the way their owners' do. To sit on the couch and take a moment to look around, to let the light hitting the pillow beside my shoulder move me to capture an image of that one little detail that makes sitting on that couch, in that space, at that time...special.
Abby and Rod, thank you for allowing me into your life for one morning. I hope these images evoke the same emotion for you as they do for me.

a weekend away at the country house
Food, Life, SpaceIt was a whirlwind to get out of Charlottesville (sort of) on time. Brian and I let out a deep sigh of relief as our car followed the Shields' to the Northern Neck. We arrived at dusk, after a quick stop for fresh oysters, the pink sky reflecting in the windows of the 19th century house evidence of a just-set sun. Sarah quickly showed us around, in the back door and out the front to admire the expansive river view. Circling around the back again we carefully stepped through the woods to the dock on the quieter inlet, the sky now a brilliant royal blue.
In the house Matt had a crackling fire going in the kitchen and oysters out, ready to be shucked. The dogs watched patiently as one by one the creatures were released from their shells, their briney juice mingling with the tang of fresh lemon. We each downed our share, then set to work preparing dinner.
With another fire roaring in the living room, we all settled in with a dinner inspired by Beyond the Flavor; steaks with avocado + jalepeno salad and potatoes roasted in duck fat. The red wine flowed and the dogs finally settled in, satisfied that we were there to stay, and eventually joining us on the furniture.
The next morning brought sunshine and warmth, and the opportunity to fully explore and get acquainted with the house Sarah's known her entire life. Charming and modest, without the modern conveniences of heat or dishwasher, the house forced us to get back to basics. We donned extra layers and fuzzy slippers and made our way downstairs to the waiting pot of coffee.
After a Hubbell breakfast of cheesy polenta, home-cured bacon, arugula, mushrooms, and a poached egg, we took turns at the sink washing away the remains of a very satisfying meal. The dogs had the run of the property, and convinced us that it was time to make our way down to the dock for a swim.
Back inside, a few hours and bottles of champagne and VA cider later, we started prepping for an early evening meal. Butternut squash roasted until completely tender while beets and carrots were sliced for salad. The perfect fall lasagne was assembled and baked as brussels sprouts married bacon in a saute pan on the gas range.
With such perfect weather, and knowing that there would be few opportunities to eat outside until Spring, we set up a table out on the lawn. The sun set as we dug into the bubbling pan and clinked glasses in celebration of a very relaxing day. More about this meal, photographed for a magazine, soon.
The next morning brought even more warmth and the desire for coffee on the dock. Inside, Team Shields prepared breakfast; kalamata toast with roasted garlicky tomatoes + thyme, sauteed mushrooms, Hubbell bacon, and a poached egg. There may have been ginger cake for dessert, too.
With just a couple of hours remaining before packing up the cars for our drive home, Matt shucked the last of the oysters on the dock as the dogs swam laps around us. With sweatshirt sleeves pushed up we all exclaimed over the warmth of the November Sunday, wishing we could stay for just one more day. Promises were made for more weekends like this one in 2013, and we're holding the Shields to it.

Painter Kiki Slaughter is one of them, and her contemporary home/studio/gallery was one of the featured spaces in the October issue of Abode.
