The Oakhurst Inn - Food

Foodandrea

The Oakhurst Inn, opening late this fall, will have a cafe headed by chef Jeanette Peabody (formerly of Hamiltons'). I spent an afternoon with Jeanette photographing a few of the dishes she has planned for the menu...and tasting them, too! With food like this, guests aren't going to ever leave!

Another Wolf Ackerman project, The Oakhurst Inn, is under way at the corner of JPA and Oakhurst Circle. The historic renovation of these three homes was actually a project that I worked on when I was a designer at Wolf Ackerman 3+ years ago.  What fun to see three of the rooms in one of the homes complete and ready for marketing photos! The Granary - Natural Retreats

Life, Spaceandrea

Looking for a getaway within reasonable driving distance to Charlottesville? Search no further. Natural Retreats offers a variety of homes for a family vacation or weekend retreat in Bath County, VA.  I was there in June to photograph a number of these unique homes and fell in love with several, but one in particular: The Granary. I loved it so much that I returned two weekends ago with Brian and the pups in tow.  See the bottom of this post for some of our Instagrams from our stay.

Where I've Been...

Food, Living Space, Spaceandrea

This has been such a busy spring + summer.  Between producing our first publication at Beyond the Flavor, shooting more interiors and food than ever before, and growing a little human, it's no wonder that there has been no time to blog!  I am hoping to get all caught up and share the fun projects I have been working on these last few months before the little man arrives in October.  Until then, here's a peek at some of what's been happening since May...

See you soon!

Living Space | A Family Home in Greenwood

Living Space, Spaceandrea

I adore this home outside of Charlottesville in Greenwood, VA. The Abbots have called this house, built 180 years ago as the Greenwood School for Boys, their home for nearly twenty years. Their three girls grew up here, as have their golden retreivers, leaving traces of family in every room. A true Living Space in every way, when I visited last December I knew I needed to return to document this special place.

The house itself is dripping with character, from uneven plaster walls to exposed beams across the ceilings, and is adorned with the simple, chic style of a family who loves comfort, nature and art. Each room is comfortably bright even on the grayest of days, nearly causing me to give in to the desire to curl up with a book or magazine on a slip-covered chair in a light-filled corner. With the family dogs pressing their noses to the glass doors, I moved through each room slowly and meticulously, taking moments to sit on a couch, touch a blanket, and observe the art on the walls, trying my best to imagine how the family who lives here inhabits each space.

Welcome to the Abbots'!

Living Space is a personal project inspired by real spaces being inhabited by real people in a very real way. If you know of a home that would be a good subject for this series, please get in touch with me, here.

Scout is Out! Charlottesville Vol. 5

Food, Published, Restaurant, Retail, Spaceandrea

A good part of my winter was spent working with Heather Halsey, editor of The Scout Guide - Charlottesville, to create the fifth volume in the beautiful Charlottesville series. What a pleasure!!! Each photo shoot was so different, with a wonderful variety of people, spaces, and products to capture. Below are a few of my favorite spreads.

Be sure to pick up the new book, available in shops and restaurants all over Charlottesville! You're sure to find inspiration cover-to-cover.

Thank you, Heather, Susie and Christy for folding me into your awesome team!  xoxo.

Our team: Heather Halsey + Andrea Hubbell.  Many thanks to Cramer Photo for capturing my portrait. :)

Meghann + Derek | Married 01.05.2013!

Lifeandrea

Meghann and Derek were married at Birdsong Barn in Florida this January!  I loved the 'Rustic Snowflake' theme of their day; the textured barn wood and sparkly snowflakes complimented each other in a very appealing way. M + D were so adorable together; Derek's calm personality perfectly balances Meghann's bubbly nature. They laughed their way through their portraits, making silly faces at each other and causing fits of giggles that made them so much fun to photograph.  And the dancing!!!  They, and their guests, knew how to party.  What a fun night!

Meghann + Derek...congratulations!!!  Much love to you both.  xoxo, A

Brookville Cookbook

Food, Restaurantandrea

Photographing a cookbook has been a dream of mine for four+ years now, ever since I created Bella Eats in 2008. I am thrilled and excited to be working with one of the best chefs in Charlottesville, Harrison Keevil, and my Beyond the Flavor partner, Sarah Cramer Shields, to create the first Brookville cookbook.  Exciting things are in the works, friends!  2013 is off to a great start.

For a sneak peek of our first shoot, check in at Beyond the Flavor.  And, please consider donating to our Kickstarter campaign!  We'd be so grateful.

Please Support Beyond the Flavor!

Food, Lifeandrea

Most of you are aware of the project I co-founded at the beginning of 2012 -- Beyond the Flavor.  Sarah Cramer Shields and I wanted to create a website dedicated to telling the stories of the people behind Charlottesville’s thriving food and drink scene with beautiful imagery and heartfelt words.  We launched the site in March, asked food writer Megan Headley to start contributing August, and have published 50+ features, happenings, and other food-related posts in the site’s 10-month life. If you visit our Cheers to 2012 post you’ll see that we’ve been very busy!

So far, Beyond the Flavor's been a labor of love for us. While our incredible readers (that's you!) have filled us to the brim with gratitude and encouragement, we want to see the project grow and to become your #1 resource for everything food- and drink-related.

We have just launched a 28-day Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $20,000 to help pay for a website that goes far beyond its current blog format.

What can you expect? Features will still be front-and-center, but displayed with a browse-able carousel of images. You'll hear and learn from past contributors through our Checking In and Kitchen Skills departments. You'll get access to a searchable recipe index or can peruse the Flavor of the Month, Make This, and Drink This departments for inspiration. Interactive additions will allow you to submit and rate recipes too. An online dining guide will prove handy to anyone looking to dine out at one of our area's 200+ unique restaurants.

We hope that you'll consider donating so that we can keep doing what we know we are meant to be doing.

Please feel free to share our project with friends and family, and thank you for your support!

Warmly,

Audrey + Javier | Married 10.13.2012 in Charlottesville

andrea

I am so excited to share Audrey + Javier's lovely wedding from last October! We've had so much fun getting to know these two over the last year - we not-so-secretly hope that they will eventually move from DC to Charlottesville - and loved being part of their planning and wedding.

We started the day with a small, intimate morning ceremony at the UVA chapel. Audrey wore her mother's wedding dress, which she'd had altered to suit her own tastes. I adored it! The sweet details were so perfect for Audrey and appropriate for their first, smaller ceremony.

After a few portraits in the UVA gardens, we all moved to Ash Lawn for Audrey + Javier's second ceremony. The guys played lawn games while the girls got ready again, and then Audrey and Javier renewed their vows in front of a crowd of their family and friends.

It was an unbelievably perfect autumn day in Charlottesville, and we were so pleased to be able to spend it with new friends. Congratulations, Audrey + Javier! We're so happy to know you.  xoxo.
